September 2022 Meeting and Newsletter

Our September meeting will include a presentation from Joe Raznik, WB8ADX, which will give us a substantial update on the ISS contact project with Davis Aerospace Technical High School. Even though Joe has opted to step away from the board for this term, he is still very instrumental in furthering our STEM/ASTEM initiatives, and this is a big one for us. He will be speaking about what has happened so far, and what is still to come before the contact in October. (Side note: The Detroit Public Schools Community District has issued a press release about this contact as well on their website.)

The meeting will take place on Wednesday, September 14th at 7:30 PM EDT at the Hazel Park District Library. We’ll also have Zoom up and running for those who can’t make it. If you are not a member and would like to attend via Zoom, please email one of the board members for further information.

Also, if you haven’t checked out our Zero Beat Newsletter recently, have a look at the Newsletter page. The September 2022 issue is available there, as are many past issues!

Picnic: Thank You!

We had our annual club picnic this past Wednesday (August 10, 2022) at Green Acres Park in Hazel Park. The turnout was great, the weather was fantastic, and the food was delicious. What more could we have wanted?

Thanks to Jim W8DPM and Bill N8QVS for handling the food and other related items to ensure a smooth event, and thanks to all of you for showing up!

We’ll see you on Wednesday, September 14 at the Hazel Park Memorial Library for the first monthly membership meeting of the 2022-2023 term. It happens at 7:30 PM EDT with socializing beginning at 7 PM.

Field Day: Thank You!

Another ARRL Field Day is now in the books. Thanks to all of you who came out to help us set up and tear down (there were a LOT of people helping this year!); to all of you who helped with the food acquisition and preparation, as well as the tents, park permits, and all of the other things that we need to secure to have this event every year; to all of you who operated stations and got contacts for our W8HP club callsign; to all of you who took part in our GOTA (Get on the Air) station (using our W8JXU callsign); to all of you who visited, even if only for a short while; and to all of you who we may have forgotten. You made it yet another HPARC event to remember!

Reminder #1: Our club picnic is right around the corner. It will be at Green Acres Park in Hazel Park on Wednesday, August 10, 2022. We will have food and it will be a fun time!

Reminder #2: Our monthly membership meetings begin again in September. Our next one will be on Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at the Hazel Park Memorial Library. Details to come!

No June Meeting, But Field Day is Coming

To dispel any confusion: There will be no June meeting. This is due to a few circumstances, some of which are beyond our control.

However, as we all know, ARRL Field Day is fast approaching, and we will be participating this year as usual. The club will have some stations set up at Scout Park in Hazel Park, MI, and we will be on the air operating between 2 PM EDT on Saturday, June 25 until 2 PM EDT on Sunday, June 26. As is tradition for Field Day, food will be provided by Bill N8QVS.

If you would like to volunteer for setup, please be at the park no later than 9 AM EDT on Saturday 6/25. We will have plenty for you to do. Thanks, and we hope to see you there!

Election 2022 – Nominations

It’s that time of year again! We have begun to seek nominations for club officers. Members should have received an email from hparcelections77 at gmail dot com with instructions on how to nominate members for office, as well as the guidelines for nomination. If you did not receive that email, please check your spam filter, or send an email to that address. We look forward to hearing from the membership – remember, whoever you nominate will potentially be leading your club for the next year!

March 2022 Meeting and Newsletter

Our March meeting will include a presentation from Barry Hansen, K7BWH, who will be speaking about meteor scatter communications on the VHF bands. This will be a fun and informative presentation about how relatively easy it is to make contacts at distances of several hundred miles or more, even if 6 meters and 2 meters are “dead”!

The meeting will take place on Wednesday, March 9th at 7:30 PM EST. As far as we know, the Hazel Park District Library will be hosting us, and of course, we’ll also have Zoom up and running for those who can’t make it. If you are not a member and would like to attend via Zoom, please email one of the board members for further information.

February 2022 Meeting and Newsletter

Our February meeting will include a presentation from Bob Witte, K0NR, who will be speaking to us about Parks on the Air (POTA) and Summits on the Air (SOTA). We also encourage you to visit Bob’s website, as he has a lot of good information on it, especially if you are into VHF+ operation.

The meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 9th at 7:30 PM EST. Due to the current situation with COVID-19 in Michigan, the Hazel Park Memorial Library has suspended all in-person gatherings, so this meeting will be taking place online only via Zoom. An email will be sent out to the membership later this week with the Zoom meeting details. If you are not a member and would like to attend via Zoom, please email one of the board members for further information.
