Field Day 2024: Thank You!

We have now had another successful Field Day operation at Camp Agawam. We dealt with some unexpected obstacles – the heat and the interference between antennas being the two biggest ones – but we pulled through and made it a productive event while still having some fun.

As usual, John AA8UU successfully managed the event from start to finish, but he gets some help making it all happen every year, and so we must thank the volunteers who gave their time and energy to help make this Field Day what it was. Bill N8QVS of course kept us well fed, which is not an easy thing to do these days due to prices and availability of food. Bob WB8ATZ brought the tower and the majority of the antennas, and thankfully, he had a lot of help putting those up and taking them down. Bob N8REL and Brad KE8WNV helped run the GOTA (Get on the Air) station to show new and prospective operators how this whole Amateur Radio thing works, at least on HF. There were several others who were onsite most or all of the weekend, so support was available if someone had a problem that needed fixing, technical or otherwise.

We are certainly looking forward to Field Day 2025, and when plans begin to crystallize for that event, they will be posted here. Thanks to all of you who helped, showed up to hang out and/or operate, or lent your support in any other way that you could.

Next up: We are having a picnic at Green Acres Park in Hazel Park, MI on Wednesday, August 14. Details coming soon!

Field Day 2024

It’s that time of year again! ARRL Field Day is coming up in a few weeks, and we plan to participate this year as usual.

We will be set up at Camp Agawam in Orion Twp., MI, which is the same park that we used last year for Field Day. We plan to operate on the air between 2 PM EDT on Saturday, June 22 and 4 PM EDT on Sunday, June 23. As is tradition for Field Day, food will be provided by Bill N8QVS.

If you would like to volunteer for setup, please be at the park no later than 9 AM EDT on Saturday 6/22. We will have plenty for you to do. Thanks, and we hope to see you there!

Field Day 2023: Thank You!

We now have another ARRL Field Day behind us. This one was important for us because it was the first one at a new venue with different accommodations than we have had in recent years. It did present some unexpected challenges, but we dealt with everything that came our way, and the event was still seen as an overall success.

Thanks to everyone who helped at any point during the event: Setup; food preparation; meeting and greeting with people (we had quite a number of new and prospective Amateur Radio operators visiting during the event); running the HF, VHF, and GOTA (Get on the Air) stations; and especially, with the quick teardown at the end.

Last but not least: We got local media coverage for the event! WWJ-AM 950 interviewed HPARC President Mike Phipps, K8WU on Saturday, June 24 at just after 10:45 AM EDT. Mike spoke about Field Day and Amateur Radio in general, which resulted in good publicity for what we were doing.

It takes a few dozen dedicated volunteers to make this event happen every year, and we are grateful for your service. Let’s do it again next year!

Pictures and media relating to the event are available here.

Field Day: Thank You!

Another ARRL Field Day is now in the books. Thanks to all of you who came out to help us set up and tear down (there were a LOT of people helping this year!); to all of you who helped with the food acquisition and preparation, as well as the tents, park permits, and all of the other things that we need to secure to have this event every year; to all of you who operated stations and got contacts for our W8HP club callsign; to all of you who took part in our GOTA (Get on the Air) station (using our W8JXU callsign); to all of you who visited, even if only for a short while; and to all of you who we may have forgotten. You made it yet another HPARC event to remember!

Reminder #1: Our club picnic is right around the corner. It will be at Green Acres Park in Hazel Park on Wednesday, August 10, 2022. We will have food and it will be a fun time!

Reminder #2: Our monthly membership meetings begin again in September. Our next one will be on Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at the Hazel Park Memorial Library. Details to come!

No June Meeting, But Field Day is Coming

To dispel any confusion: There will be no June meeting. This is due to a few circumstances, some of which are beyond our control.

However, as we all know, ARRL Field Day is fast approaching, and we will be participating this year as usual. The club will have some stations set up at Scout Park in Hazel Park, MI, and we will be on the air operating between 2 PM EDT on Saturday, June 25 until 2 PM EDT on Sunday, June 26. As is tradition for Field Day, food will be provided by Bill N8QVS.

If you would like to volunteer for setup, please be at the park no later than 9 AM EDT on Saturday 6/25. We will have plenty for you to do. Thanks, and we hope to see you there!
