Annual HPARC Holiday Party

We are having our annual Holiday Party again this year. It will be in the community room – same one where we hold our monthly membership meetings – on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 at the Hazel Park Memorial Library, 123 E. If you have a spouse, another family member, or a friend, bring them, too!

The Holiday Party begins at 7:00 PM ET and runs until about 9:00 PM ET. We hope to see you there!

Additionally, we now have the December 2023 issue of the Zero Beat Newsletter available for download on the Newsletters page. Feel free to check it out!

October 2023 Meeting

The next meeting of the Hazel Park Amateur Radio Club will be held on Wednesday, October 11th at 7:30 PM ET at the Hazel Park Memorial Library. Socializing starts around 7:00 PM. The meeting will include a presentation by Michael Fluegemann, KE8AQW on Radio in Scouting.

In his own words: “Over the past couple years, I’ve had the opportunity to share ham radio with multiple Scouts in the BSA program through SOTA activations on a high adventure trip, offering the radio merit badge, and most recently volunteering with K2BSA at the National Jamboree in West Virginia earlier in July. I’d like to share with the club photos from these activities and let them know about other opportunities to mentor youth and how their radio hobby intersects with scouting. One such opportunity is an event called Jamboree on the Air. This is the largest annual international scouting event with scouts communicating with other scouts and ham operators all over the world. This year the event takes place October 21-22. I will be hosting a JOTA activation at D-Bar-A Scout Ranch in Metamora, MI and am looking for volunteers to assist.” Michael is the president of the Ford Amateur Radio League and an avid BSA volunteer.”

Field Day 2023: Thank You!

We now have another ARRL Field Day behind us. This one was important for us because it was the first one at a new venue with different accommodations than we have had in recent years. It did present some unexpected challenges, but we dealt with everything that came our way, and the event was still seen as an overall success.

Thanks to everyone who helped at any point during the event: Setup; food preparation; meeting and greeting with people (we had quite a number of new and prospective Amateur Radio operators visiting during the event); running the HF, VHF, and GOTA (Get on the Air) stations; and especially, with the quick teardown at the end.

Last but not least: We got local media coverage for the event! WWJ-AM 950 interviewed HPARC President Mike Phipps, K8WU on Saturday, June 24 at just after 10:45 AM EDT. Mike spoke about Field Day and Amateur Radio in general, which resulted in good publicity for what we were doing.

It takes a few dozen dedicated volunteers to make this event happen every year, and we are grateful for your service. Let’s do it again next year!

Pictures and media relating to the event are available here.
